Deposits explained: caps, schemes and what to do if there's a dispute

Deposits are one of the most-disputed parts of renting. The rules are simpler than they look.

How much can a landlord ask for?

Maximum 5 weeks' rent — or 6 weeks if annual rent is over £50,000. Anything more is unlawful.

Where it must be held

Within 30 days of payment, the landlord must protect it with DPS, MyDeposits or TDS and share the prescribed information.
